Camphor
£2.00
Camphor is a highly aromatic, waxy compound primarily extracted from the wood of the camphor laurel tree (Cinnamomum camphora). While not a culinary herb, its intense medicinal, eucalyptus-like fragrance makes it highly valued in aromatherapy, as a moth repellent, and in topical pain-relief ointments.
🌿 Botanical Sources
While native to East Asia, the camphor scent can also be found in several garden herbs and plants:
- Camphor Thyme (Thymus camphoratus): A low-growing, drought-tolerant herb with grayish-green leaves. It is used in herbal teas, as well as in Mediterranean and rustic meat dishes.
- Camphor Plant / Costmary (Tanacetum balsamita): A hardy perennial with large, strongly aromatic leaves traditionally used in potpourri and as a natural moth repellent.
- Other Plants: Naturally occurring camphor is also found in trace amounts in [Rosmarinus officinalis] and basil.
🩺 Uses and Benefits
- Topical Pain Relief: Widely used in creams and oils to help soothe aching muscles, arthritis, and joint pain.
- Respiratory Support: Vaporized in diffusers or used in chest rubs to clear congestion and promote clear lungs.
- Repellent: Dried camphor herb leaves are used to naturally deter moths and other insects.
⚠️ Important Safety Precautions
Camphor must be handled with care:
- Toxic if ingested: It is poisonous if taken internally, even in small doses, and can cause severe reactions.
- Topical application: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil and never apply to open wounds, broken skin, or the faces of young children.
